Manawatu County Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held at Sanson yesterday at 11.80. Present — Crs. Ransom (Chairman), Taylor, Robinson, Masters and Strong.
. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The correspondence received was read as follows : —
From T. Potter Clark, Campbelltown, complaining of the bad condition of Tompkins' Line, between Jones' and Milners' Lines.
From Railway Engineer's} Department, Wanganui, saying that Mr P. Guerin is employed by the Department to impound cattle found on the Railway Reserve, and wanting to know if the Ranger retains the fees for such impounding.
From Manager Bank of Australasia, Foxton, referring to Loan moneys.
From Manager Carnarvon Estate, saying that Mr Thomas Potter Clark
had purchased sections 113, 120 and 121, Carnarvon Estate, and requesting that Mr Clark's name be placed on rate-roll for same.
From J. Botteher. Campbelltown, pointing out that the property he is rated for passed out of his hands twelve months ago and is now in the occupation of H. C. Bottcher and Chas. Neihon.
From Harriet Bowater, Sandon, asking for her son's name to be placed on rate-roll instead of n^ej^ for section 62 in Kangitikei Block.
From E. Jennins, Feilding re a mistake made in the number of acres he is renting, and asking that the Council make the correction, when sending in the rate-account.
From the Treasury, approving of the application for a loan of £200 for construction of road connecting McDonell's line with Main-Eoad.
From Walter Butherfurd, apply ing for the balance due of £112 da 5d for hospital and charitable aid purposes.
From J. Herbert Han kins, re* ferring to matters connected with the sale of the tramway.
From Hugh L. Sherwill, Feilding, sending the names of the ratepayers who are to be included in the district to be specially rated for the loan of £250 for protective works on Mr Bull's property, also forwarding copies of resolutions passed at a meeting of said ratepayers.
From the Treasury, as to the necessity for payments of the halfyearly interest for loans under " The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act," 1886, punctually on the respective due dates.
From Land and Income Tax Department, forwarding a declaration for payment of subsidy.
From M. Morrison, complaining of two culverts on Main Drain road, Oroua Bridge.
Fiom John Lumsden, complaining of the state of Whale Line, Taikorea.
From John Nicholas, Campbelltown, asking that the Council will see to keeping the roads kept clear of cattle, as he had had a number of fences broken.
From Town Clerk, Foxton, forwarding a copy of resolution passed respecting the matter of the pur* chase of the Foxton-Sanson Tramway referred to in Mr J. Wright Stewart's letter.
From Chas. Grace, Sandon, asking the Council to put in a culvert adjoining his property.
From J. Tompkins, Campbelltown, drawing attention to the dangerous way in which the ratepayers are leaving the sandbank opposite his property.
From Clerk Wirokino Road Board, forwarding copy of resolution passed re damage done by contractors on Foxton-Snannori *ofid and asking the Council to protect same in any future contracts. From proprietors Feildipg £&AqT asking for advertising conneetea with the raising of a loan for river protection works on Awahuri road. From Cleric Ashburton County Council, requiring information a3 to the piyment for Councillors'? traveling expenses. . *;^ Fro'n Department of Agriculture, sending circular as to practical suggestions for tree-planting on Ist August (Arbor Day). Prop sed by Cr Bobinson, se«« conded by Cr Masters, That sections 113, 120, 121, he transferred on the rate-book from Bank of .New Zealand Estates Company to T. Potter Clark, and section 61, Baugitoto Block, from Harriet BowateflJfco J. H. Bowater. — Carried. . Proposed by Cr Bobinson, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the overseer attend to the culverts on the Main drain road, complained of by Mr Morrison. — Carried. ■'_.-. c Proposed by Or Taylor, seconded by Cr Ransom, That the overseer inspect the road complained off in Mr Lumsden's letter, and as far as possible rectify the matter 4om« plained of.— Carried* ; Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Robinson, That the letter of Mr J# Nicholas re imponndiag fettle on Oampbelltown roads be teffjirred to the ranger.— -Carried. '■■.-- ■* Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Ransom — That thiar Council put in a clause in all their future contracts for road metalling, that, the contractor repair any damage to. any road carted over. Carried. •■ j Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Robinson— -That this Cbqncil have the culvert put through the tramway near Mr C. Grace's property, a3 ordered some time since, without further delay. Carried. *■ f The Council then adjourned until 2 o'clock. Upon resuming, it was resolved, on the motion of -Cr . seconded by Cr Taylor-^'TkfitW fedtiee be put in the paper warning people against removing sand or any other matter from any roads in the county without the permission of the Council. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor— That this Connoii approves of section 287 to 297, Sanson, being used to impound cattle in when pound is inconveniently crowded. Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Taylor— That Councillor Hammond be granted leave of absence from this meeting. Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Robinson— That Messrs Strang Bros, be allowed to erect a
gate across road to their property, subject to pleasure of this Council. Carried.
A special meeting of the Council was held at which the following motions were carried :-■
Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Strang, That the special order made on June 13th striking a rate of | of a penny in the £ over the rateable property within the Campbell special rating district be now 'Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Or Strang, That a special meet ing to make special order re sale of tramway, be held on July 20th, at 2 o'clock.
Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Strang, That the bye-laws made by the Council regarding traffic on) roads bo adopted, and that a special order bt now made to adopt them.
The Council then resumed its ordinary business.
Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That the overseer be instructed to enlarge small bridge, and repair Kopani bridge as soon as possible. Carried
Proposed by O Masters, seconded by O Strang, That the chairman, and Crs Hammond and Masters wait upon the Manawatu Road Board at its next meeting with regard to repairing the Awahuri bridge. Carried.
The overseer's report having been read, which showed the roads to be in fair order for this time of the year, and the usual batch of accounts passed for payment, the Council adjourned.
