Manamatu Herald. TUESDAY, JULY 10, 1894. Another Government Victory.

On Friday the Government secured another victory, the " inevitable " majority as one Wellington newspaper termed it, voting almost solid in favour of the scandalous evasion of the Disqualification Act in the appointment of Mr Fraser as Sergeant-at-arms. The vote showed that four members of the Government party refused to be " whipped " for snch a cause, amongst the four we were glad to see the name of the member for Paimerston. It appears pratty evident that though Mr Pirani secured his election by asserting his support of the Government, the session will not close without our witnessing him as much an opponent of theirs as is Mr Earnahaw. Mr Pirani will make a much better member of the House unfettered, and we shall be glad to record the time when he has thrown his shackles to the winds. It is risky to be independent, and whilst urging this member to remember his constituents, it may be that he considers he has a duty in considering himself. This is no new course which we are now urging on the member for Paimerston as, at his election we counselled him to leave the Government alone, and he has justified our advice by refusing to vote the same way as his favourite P.trly on the second division of the Session. Rumours stated, after the Members had been " run in " at the beginning of the week, on the same miserable subject, that they had asserted they would not again be treated in such a manner, but when the next ' whip ' takes place away they go to the kennel they are bid. Suoh conduct raises the question as to the value of Party Government, and but a very little more will cause the constituencies to ask what is the good of such so-called representatives. The future conduot of members supporting the Government will be watohed with much interest, but that they will dare to show a spirit oi independence is not to be expected.
