The Farmer as Exporter.
What the colony would do without its sturdy sons of the soil is shown by mentioning what they do in the export trade. During the year 1893 they kept their hand to the plough and worked in that steady dogged fashion which enabled them to outstrip all else in the business of exporters. Going through the Statistics we find first mentioned an export of horned cattle numbering IS to New South Wales, 22 to Fiji, and 99 to the South Sea Islands, valued at £979. They sent away 894 horses, of which number 288 went to Bengal, of the value of £22,663. 232 pigs of the value of £394 went to the various colonies, as well as £484 worth of poultry. There were also 3,682 sheep sent the same way, valued at £7,562. Bacon weighing 692 cwt. and hams weighing 975 cwt. was also exported to the value of £6,532. Bones weighing 7 tons and worth £39 also left these shores. 4,495 tons of bran and pollard went away, of the value of £12,07*. Butter weighing 58,149 cwt. and valued at £254,645 and 46,201 cwt. of cheese valued at £99,626 was sent away. Chaff, 40 tons at £166; 8,084 dozen of eggs valued at £146 ; 2,068 tons of flour worth £13,982 are some more of the items. 40,540 bushels of barley equalling £6,922; 158,320 bushels of beana and peas at £24,677 ; 49,671 bushels of maize at £7,505 ; 1,945,587 bushels of oats at £190,094 ; 2,619,---398 bushels of wheat at £848,626 make some more of the farmers' help, besides 217 tons of hay and straw valued at £799. I Hides numbering 12,973 valued at £8,890; honey over 36,0001bs worth £614; 1667 cwt. hops at £9,668 ; horns and hoofs, 54 tons at £438 help the addition. Ther« is also 41,902" bushels of malt at £10,573 to add. We next, come •■ to the chief item bar one — Frozen mutton, innumerable carcases valued at £883,687 ; frozen lamb valued as £288,510; frozen pork £219, other meats £6,---52 7; frozen beef £11,224 ; a nice little item ! Then we have potted "~rl meats to the value of £46,601 ; salt beef £5,867 ; salt pork £359. Tho farmers sent away 1,976 cwt. of onions valued at £702 ; 5j804 tons of potatoes said to Te worth £28,808 ; grass seeds to the /alue of £571,554 ; rabbit akins valued <sfc £188,952; sheep skins with -wool £51,748 ; skins without wool £117,« 551 ; tallow weighing 8,508 tons worih £183,588; fresh vegetables valued at £297 ; besides wool. Over 85 million pounds weight of greasy wool, over 16 million pounds weight of scoured wool, and over 8 milliou pounds weight of washed wool were exported, valued at £%- -774,7381 JMark Jhis, " the <tisd value of the produce and manufactures of the colony exported in the year 1893 amounted to £8,557,---443 and out of this the farmers found £6,511,976.
