Publicans and their Landlords.
[ The following remarkable circular has been sent by a firm of Christchurch brewers to the owners of various hotels in that city : — Brewery, Christchurch. Dear Sir, — I beg to draw your attention to the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Acfc, which contains very much stricter provisions for the enforcement of the law with regard to Sunday trading, selling after hours, etc., than the Act of 1881, and that owners of hotels have their interests very much more at the mercy of tenants than formerly, there is at present a movement on foot in Christchurch to get all the hotel-keepers to close strictly on Sunday and punctually at the legal hour every nighfc. As this will entail a certain loss of business, many of the principal owners have agreed to make a concession in their rents to the tenants, to be returned in the shape of a bonus, on being satisfied thafc fche law is being strictly complied with. All those who have been approached have recognised the principle (sic.) as an equitable one, the concessions being based upon the calculation that six days business will be done instead of seven, and that a seventh of the rent in all cases be remitted. I shall bo glad if you will give this matter your careful consideration with regard to the . Hotel, and favour me with early reply. — Chronicle.
