An alarming accident occurred to the R.M.S. Ethiopia on the voyage from Liverpool to New York. The steamer -was in mid-ocean when she collided with an iceberg. The Ethiopia was travelling at great speed at the time, and the force of the collision was so great that the vessel's bows were stove in. £ The shack caused tremendous excitement amongst the passengers. For some time the steamer was in imminent danger of foundering, but eventually it was recognised that she was safe. The artificial watertight bulkheads saved the vessel, and so-pre-vented a terrible disaster. The death- roll since the outbreak of the Bubonic plague at Hongkong has reached 1900. ~ The epidemic has created con* sternation in the town, and 80,000 of the population have fled to other districts.
