Sir John Hall, of New Zealand, addressing a meeting of the Colonial Party in the House of Commons, said he questioned whether it was advisable for New Zealand to establish a protectorate over Samoa. On the subject of the estate duties, he thought Sir \V r . V. Harcourt's proposals would alienate the loyalty of the colonies. The Rev. H. Price-Hughes, the well-known Wesleyan clergyman, declarea that the Non-Conformist will not long tolerate a Premier with the racing proclivities of Lord Rose bery and one who patronises carnivals of rascality. Lord Randolph Churchill has decided to visit the Australian colonies, and will make the journey via America. Bishop Tucker, of East Africa, considers that events will soon compel the building of a railway to Uganda as a means of restraining slavers and securing the safety of the British stations on Lake Victoria Nyanza. The Sutherland will case has been settled by the Court. The Duchess g^laimed £1,500,000, and has been awarded £500,000, with an annuity of £5000. Speaking at a political banquet, the Marquis of Salisbury declared that Sir W. V. Harcourt's Budget bad created the first serious difference between Australia and England. Owing to the proposals in the Budget, a number of very large landowners are considering the question of breaking up their estates. The Duke of Westminster is selling his Pimlico freeholds. It is improbable that any action will be taken against tbe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's late directors in connection with the payment of dividends out of capital.
