The English Government and the Irish Members.
The indifference of the AntiParnellites — nine of whom were absent unpaired on 7th April when the second reading of the East London Water Bill was carried in opposition to the Government by 228 to 227, the Government being thus in a minority of one— is causing the Government some anxiety, as well as the growing impatience of their supporters. The Parnellites seem to have fallen away from Lord Rosebery for good. Mr W. Redmond speaking at Ennis last month said, " the present Government could do nothing for Ireland. . . he saw no reason why they should go on supporting the Government that dropped the Home Rule Bill, put the evicted tenants in a second' ary place on their programme, and still kept the doors locked upon John Daly and the political prisoners." He charged Mr Morley with jury packing after the fashion of Mr Balfour, because the former finds it necessary to secure a jury who will give an honest verdict, and to ex* elude Nationalists who would screen criminals from punishment.
