OTAKI RACING CLUB.
The above Club are to be congratulated on the success of their winter meeting, both financially and Jrpm a racing point of view. The . wtendanee was exceedingly large, the weather all that could be desired, and the fields numerous— the largest -being 17 in the Stewards Handicap, which event Huia won and paid the -: bestprikidend of the day, £28 17s. A l^tle trouble occurred over this race owing to Huia's name not np jtearing on the official card. The gacretary (Mr H. F. Eagar) was «ao3t coorteous to all, and evidently the right man in the right place.
The sum of £3552 went through the totalisator, which was worked by Mr Ames, of Wellington. Appended are the results : — Trial Handicap, £ of a mile. Comfort, 7st4lb ... 1 Aotea, 7st 71b ... 2 Tubiwai, 7st 181 b ... 3 Also started— Langdale, Primus, Althene, Moata, Raukawa, Riporipo, and Lady Kilburne. Comfort and Tuhiwai had a slight advantage of a very good start,, and carried on the running until the straight was reached when Aotea joined issue, Half way down the straight Comfort forged ahead and won all out by a length, Tuhiwai a good third. Dividend, £19 19s. First Hurdle Handicap, 1 mile 66 chains, Tricky Jack, 9st 71b ... 1 Spreydon list 71k ... 2 Rangipai Oat IX .., 8 Karamea, Borneo, Chrystal, Remit, Mac and Austral also started. From an, indifferent start Result and Rangipai were first away and lead over the first fence followed by Romeo, Chrystal, Karamea, Tricky Jack and Spreydon. No material change occurred until half a mile from home when Tricky Jack assumed command, and Spreydon improved his position. From this out the issue was never in doubt, Tricky Jack winning comfortably from the top* weight, Rangipai a poor third. Dividend, £6 17s. Boyle Plate, 1 mile. Jacobite Bst 9lb ... 1 The Miser Bst 61b ... 2 Tuhiwai Bst 91b ... 3 Langdale, Aroha, Raukawa, Juanita, Tomboy, Aotta Lady Kilburne Comfort, Blunderbuss, Swordfish, and Athene also started. The Miser was first to break the line the rest moving off together. Entering the straight Jocobite supplanted The Miser, and coming on won comfortubly by two lengths, Tnhiwai a good third. Dividend, £2 10s. Glasgow Plate, 1|- miles. Pihanga Bst 61b ... 1 Huia7stßlb ... 2 Kahnea Bst 61b ... S Swift, Mairua, Tangaroa, Silent Friend, Roll Call, Trickery, Vain Glory, Tamarere, Jacobite, Makomako, Unfortunate Bouquet and Sweet Dream also started. All got away well with the exception of Vain Glory, who was left at the post. When the horses had settled down the colors of Trickery were most prominent, with Silent Friend, Swift and Kalmea racing together next. Passing the stand the order was the same. A little further on Pihanga and Roll Call improved their positions.. Mairua was here set going and and was soon in command of affairs, and led along the back stretch. Entering the straight the field closed up. Half way up the straight Pihanga shot out from the ruck, ' and coming on full of running won easily by a length from Huia, JCalinea a good third. Dividend, £11 ss. Second Hurdles, li miles. Rangipai 9st 131 b ". . 1 Spreydon list 111 b ... 2 Romeo 9st ... 8 Tricky Jack also started. Rangi. pai led all the way winning easily from Spreydon, Romeo a poor third. Mac fell at the third hurdle. Dividend, £4 15s. Flying Handicap, three-quarters ot a mile. 'Voltaire Bst 21b ... 1 Bonovoree Bst 181 b ... 2 Mairua Bst 61b ... 8 Marama, Langdale, Tangaroa, Roll Call, Tamarere, Overseer, Merryman , Besant, Ekui and Vain Glory also started. Marama was quickest away and led for half a mile, when Bonovoree and Voltaire both passed him. In the straight Voltaire came away and won easily by two lengths, Mairua a good third. Dividend, £6 4s. Stewards Stakes Handicap, 1J miles. Huia 7st lllbs . . 1 Tenby Get 111 b ... 2 Silent Friend 7st 111 b 8 Bonovoree, Kalmea, Pihanga, Swift, Makomako, The Toad,* Vain Glory Trickery, Sweet Dream, Merryman, Silver and Bouquet also Started. Trickery led for threequarters of a mile, when she was joined by Tenby and Silent Friend. When the straight was reached Huia assumed command and won all out by a length, Silent Friend a poor third. Dividend, £23 17s.
