Two hundred cab-owneis, possessing 1500 cabs, have agreed to the union terms. There is little inconvenience to the travelling public, notwithstanding that 9000 men are out on strike.
The cab-owners assert that the drivers do not divulge the amount of their daily receipts, and always retain five shillings, also that they sub-let cabs for a portion of the day. The Committee of Inspection appointed by the shareholders and creditors of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company considers that, assuming the claim against the members of the old Board for the return of dividends paid out of capital to be legal, it would decidedly be impolitic to enforce it in view of the interest of the new Company. Mr Stewart, the Official Receiver, dissents from this view, and is convening a. meeting of the creditors to •consider the question, and will iconsulfc Judge Williams with reference to the matter. .Qne thousand tons of colonial butter are afloat for London, and the great bulk must be stored till October. A Sydney resident, in a letter to the newspapers, states that the daughters of old colonial families have had to become domestic helps, and that a thousand unemployed are sleeping in the parks. New Zealand long- berried wheat, ex warehouse, 26s 6d, market restricted; South Australian do, 26s 6d, weaker ; Victorian do, 265, flat. Frozen mutton, first quality, 4d ; second quality, 8£ ; lamb, first quality, 4£d. At the wool sales faulty merinos are slow of sale, and buyers favour other sorts, which are firm. The Olrig brand, New Zealand, brought 7£d.
