Supposed Attempted Suicide.

Early yesterday morning the tbwrt was surprised to learn :that iOue^f the old settlers, Mr Andrew- JdnSoti; had attempted to shorten- his <$6X46f by taking poison. It appears thft' about half-past eight in ,the morning Mr Jonaon was seen to tak'a a bottle of lotion marked poisoV, which he had had by him some years, and calmly help himself to a teaspoonful. He then remarked to his wife " I'll not trouble you much longer." He then either walked to Mr Ray, the local solicitor, or sent him a message that he desired to make his will, at any rate Mr Ray went up to

the htfuae and took his instructions for a will. Constable Gillespie having learnt that something peculiar was going on in Jonson's house, paid it a visit, ahd having heard that Dr. Dernier had been sent for, he awaited his coming. The doctor was shown the bottle of linament, which' he pronounced to be a mixture of aconite and belladonna. Jonson had been put to bed, and had become powerless in hia legs. Dr Dernier injected a counter irritant, and afteryrards applied the stomach pump, whioh was strongly resented by the .pairent, but with good success. ' "We learn on inquiry that Mr JonH son appears to be very much better 'this morning, being able to be up • and about. The law will most probably de mand some further explanation of what at present appears to be a most unacoountable proceeding. Mr Andrew Jonson has been a resident of Foxton for the past 25 or 2G years, and has always been held in estimation.
