Palmerston District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.
V.. .The usual monthly meeting of. the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs G. M. Snelson (chairman), Ravenhill, Kendall, Nye, Ransom? Saxon, Park and Taylor, Correspondence was received from : — ;* Kiwitea Road Board, applying for a refund of £27 Ids, expended in charitable aid. From Auditor-General, forwarding certified balance-sheet. From Inspector of Hospitals, approving of the by-laws. The Chairman reported that he had instructed the doctor at Pahiatua 1 noli to ; send : any patients to the Palmerston hospital, ' on account of the prevalence of typhoid fever in. 1 that district.-— Aotion confirmed. ■The- Chairman said the estimate of receipts and expenditure for the present year had been so arranged, as fo show a slight credit at the end of the financial year. This result would most certainly be achieved if no extraordinary expenditure was incurred during the year. The balance sheet was adopted on the motion of Mr Taylor, seconded by Mr Saxon. The bye-laws as approved by the Inspector of Hospitals, were adopted, and the Secretary was instructed to get 100 copies printed. Mv Saxon handed over a donation of £5 forwarded by Mr Percy Burell ofFeilding in aid of the Hospital funds. — Donation received with thanks. A draft copy of a bill to consolidate the Destitute Persons Act, was referred to the Executive Committee to report on. Mr Raven hill reported that the hospital roof leaked considerably, and he had noticed that after the last storm the hall was flooded. The chimney in the wash-house also required attention. At present the fire was forced out about three feet When the wind was in a certain position, and there was considerable danger of the building taking fire. The matron also required a disinfecting room. — The matters complained of were referred to the Executive Committee with power to •Ot. f ■ Mj: Park suggested that the nurses be gi'ftded and paid according to 4 'position. At present the junior nurse was receiving more than one of the senior nurses. He thought: the nurses should be graded and salaries paid at the following rate :— £4o, £85 and £80Mr, Taylor was opposed to increasing the salaries, in view of the heavy expenditure necessary to maintain the hospital during tho present year. —Mr Park pointed out that one of the nurses had left a position at a salary of £35 with the expectation of receiving the same salary here. — The Chairman was opposed to raising the salaries until the nurses complained that they were underpaid. He had no objection to grading the nurses. He was, however, satisfied that the nurse who had come to the institution with the ex* .pectation of receiving £35 should not be kept at £25, while the newly ; ftppoipted\-niu?se. was receiving £30. — Oft the motion of Mr.Park., it was decided to inorease the salary of £25 to £Qd.-±Standard.
