Manawatu County Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held at Hanson yesterday, at 11.30 a.m. Present—Ci's. Ransom (chairman), J. G. Wilson, F. Robinson, H. Hammond, \V. Taylor, A. Strang and T. Masters. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the eoil'es- ■ pondence received was read as follows : — • From N. Rich, asking that J. Canning's name be substituted for his in rate-book for sections 146 and 152) Campbell town, as had disposed of them. From Richard Dafter and John Leat, applying for an extension of time to finish their contract of clearing on the HalcombeFeilding road, ai the rain coming on had prevented them burning the scrub. ; From C. N. Clausen, Maharahara, saying he had consigned sleepers to the Council, and other truck loads would be sent if required. .' „ From W. J. Arnold, Campbelltown, re. an alteration in rate-book for sections 144, 202, 204 and 206, as he had purchased them from Mr R. Cobb ; also mentioning other alterations necessary in rate-book. From clerk Foxton Borough Council, Bending a copy of a resolution passed by that body as to the advisability of raising a loan for the bridging of the Mauawatu river at Wirokino and Motoa, and suggesting that a meeting of representatives from the Wirokino Road Board and Manawatu County Council should be held, such meet* ing to take place at the Foxton Borough offices on Monday, 11th June. ' From J. R. McLennan, saying he was willing to meet the Council half-way in stopping sand-drifts on to the tram-line. From James Saunders, Motoa, applying for permission to erect a gate on public road at the N.E. boundary of his property. From the Railway Department, notifying that the application of Council for a railway tricycle had been referred to the head office . From manager Bank of Australasia, Foxton, notifying that the general account was overdrawn £020, and the separate district account £226 ; also requiring a copy of estimated receipts and expenditure for the year and balance-sheet. From Wairarapa North County Council, sending a copy of by-laws, regulating width of tires of wheels, construction and maintenance of cart crossings .Qy;er footpaths, and the conditions, upon ■ which traction engines may be allowed to pass along roads. - From secretary to the Treasury Department, saying the loan of £775 for forming and metalling certain roads in the Sandou riding was now available. From same, regarding the application of Council for a loan of £200 for the purchase of land and fencing for road on McDonell's line, and regretting that he was unable to grant the above-mentioned loan, as loans to local bodies were restricted only for the construction of public works. From Thomas Clune, drawing attention to a road culvert leading from liis pvopevty to Mr Tennant'H flaxinill, which was too high, causing all the water to spread back on his land. From William Graham, pointing out the place* on the tram-line that would require iteeing to, caused by the sand drifting, - From J. Herbert Hanklns, sending deposit with cheque for J, Wilson, ferryman at Shannon. From Mr Prior, solicitor, jFeilding, relat-', ing to papers connected with the lease of. the Rangitikei Ferry to the former lessee, Mrs Scott. Mr Simpson, a resident on Freoklington line, waited on the Council, and asked that Bteps should be taken to remedy the state of the road drain adjoining his property. He thought all that was required could be done at very little expense, and by making the drajin a little larger it would carry the away. >ft w4s reaoived, on the motion of Cr Masters, seoonded by Cr Strang,. ' J JftqpoaeA by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Taylor, ' That the Council apply to the Bank of Australasia for a further overdraft Of £500.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Wilson, That Mr Saunders' application (or a gate across bye-road at Moutoa be granted daring the pleasure of the Council. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Hammond, That the overseer inspect the onlvert oomplained of by Mr Clune, and lower it if required.— Carried. Proposed by Cr V\ ilson, seoonded by Cr Bansom, That Councillors Robinson and Strang be appointed to meet the delegates from the other local bodies in referenoe to the bridging of the Manawatu at Foxton on 11th June. — Carried. The Council then adjourned until 2 p.m. Upon resuming, the chairman read a rough estimate of receipts and expenditure for the ooming year, and they were passed is read. A special meeting vrai held to strike the* rates, and the following resolutions were passed:— Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Taylor, That this Council do now strike a general rate of £ of a penny in th& pound on the rateable value of aH the rateable property in the Manawatu County for the year ending 31st March, 1895, and that the same shall be payable in one sum aji the County office, Sanson, on 20th May, 1894. Proposed by the chairman, seconded by Cr Wilson, That this Council do now gtrike a separate rate of $ of a penny in the pound on the rateable value of all the rateable property within each of the ridings of Sandon, Carnarvon, Kawa Kawa> and Awahfou, and ~a separate rate of § of a penny in the pound on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the ridings of Campbell and Waitohi, and | of a penny in the pound on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the riding of Mount Stewaart for the year endfag 81st March, 1895, and that the same shall become payable in one sum at the County office, Sanaon, on May 20th, 1894. The Council resumed its ordinary sitting. '"Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Or Ransom, That the Overseer take immediate steps to improve the bridge on the Sdlding«Awahuri road, known as Bone's •ridge.-Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr Robinson, That Pat Guerin, of Foxton, be offered the billet of ranger for the Awahou Riding for the sum of £5 and half the driving fees.— Carried. The Overseer's report was read, which r showed the roads to be in a fair condition. 'CfciJtobinson proposed, and Cr Hammond seooftded, That the extra 100 yards metal required on Foxton Sanson road be agreed to.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded by Cr Strang, That one insertion be put in the Advocafe requesting all ratepayers on the. defaulter's list to pay their rates before the 31st May, otherwise they will be sued for. v^feout further notice.— Carried. ,• Th£ usnal batch of accounts were passed for payment and the Council adjourned.
