A Dream.
In connection with the death o! Patrick McGowan, the well-known Ballavat horseman, it is stated, as a strange coincidence, that on the Monday night before the races, the widow of the deceased dreamed that something terrible was about to happen, and on rising on Tuesday morning she, knowing that her husband wa3 engaged in the races to be held that day in Melbourne expressed, in conversation with a relative, a hope that " Pat would not meet with an accident or any other bad luck." Early in the day Mrs MoGowan reooived a telegram stating her husband had won the first race (Maiden Plate), and the news nad 4 very phaering effeot upon her, inasmuch as she remarked, the success of MeGovyan^ on Lord Randolph had "reversed" 1 heriaream of the previous nigty, and that as was usual in connection with dreams, quite the opposite had taken place. Shortly before sis o'clock on Tuesday, however, news of the death of McGowan was telegraphed to» Ballarat to Mr John Moran, of the firm of Messrs McLeod and Booth, an intimate friend of the deceased, and upon whom was deputed the unpleasant duty of " breaking the news "to the widow. Mr Moran, upon meeting Mrs McGowan, said : I have called to tell you about an accident to Pat." The widow replied : "Is he dead ? I thought something terrible was about to happen, as I bad a dream last night." _Mr Moran replied : " Well you m.qtt be prepared to hear the worst; but nptlnng definite is yet known." The sad truth was .subsequently unfolded' to the poor woman, who collapsed with grief, and tho surrounding.? were just then rendered. more painful by the unexpected arrival of tho aged mother of deceased, who had called to inquire "What luck, Pat had met with at the rapes, M'CJo^an made' his will only a fortnight ago, "his property heing valued at between £5,000 and $0,000,
