Mr- Gladstone, in a letter to Mr John Cowan, chairman of his Mid- ' lothian Committee, virtually bids a stately and pathetic tarewell to his constituents, and warns the Democracy that they are entering on a period of great moral danger, aud had better beware of temptations. He urges them to give preference to the interests of the whole instead of part of the community. Mr Gladstone, replying to the address presented him by the Scotch Liberals, haa declared that his career was chargeable with many errors of judgment, but was governed by uprightness of intention. His future attendance in Parliament, he aaid, would be uncertain, as after sixty years' contention he was glad of the relief from active conflict. The attitude of the House of Lords, regarding the Liberals, he thought demanded an early decision from the country. He concluded by. stating that Lord Kosebery waa the new spirit aiming to improve the workers' lot in England, but the greatest danger ot the overgrown population would be from their being permitted to remain ignorant. Dr Nettleship certifies that Mr Gladstone has cataracts in both eyes.
