The above Club's annual gathering took place on Saturday (St. Patrick's Day). The attendance wasr large, and speculation brisk, the sum of £2179 being put through the total* isator. The racing was very exciting, the judge (Mr J. Stevens) in two instances giving his verdict as a dead heat. Tha feature of the meeting was the starting, and Mr E. Woods is to be complimented on hi? success with the flag. The officials all worked hard, and had the unpleasant duty of deciding a protest in the first race, and the stakes were awarded to the second horse. A good band was in attendance to enliven the proceedings. The visitors were loud in their appreciation of the excellent lunch that was provided. Appended are the results : — 1. Fortune, Lady Clare, Kahurangi and Tricky Jack were scratched From a splendid start Kai Iwi Lady. Roll Call, and Barman were first to move, with Pihanga, Artist and Buckler close up. A quarter of a mile from home Barman lost his position, the rest all in a bunch. Entering the straight 801 l Call had a slight advantage, with,the fovorite (Kai Iwi Lady) her nearest attendant, followed by The Artist, Buckler, Strike, Pihanga and Barman in that order. A splendid race homo resulted in favor of Roll Call by a short head, Pihanga close np third. A protest was entered against , the winner on the grounds of interference, and was sustained by the Stewards. Time, lmin 20secSi Dividend, £2 6s. 2. Besant led for three parts of the journey, when he was displaced by Oruis'teen. Fifty yards from home Rangipai came with a wet sail, and won all oat by a length. Time. Sunn 6seo. Narrate was quickest to move followed by Lady Clare, Kauri Gum,' Buckler and Eothen' in thai order. Passing the stand the order was thY '" same. At the back of the coarse Narrate fell back, and Kauri Gum carried ou the running with Huia and Buckler her nearest attendants. Entering the straight Huia rushed ' - to the front and was never caught,.
Buckler beating Kauri Gum by a short head for second honors, followed by Narrate, Lady Clare and Eothen in that order. Time, 2min 45sec. Dividend, £%G 15s. /L,ti. Marama rushed to the front when the flag fell and was never caught, ' winning by a clear length from Never Return, who camo very fast at the finish. Time, 58 h Dividend £2. 6. Maiden Flat Race of 30 soys ; second horse to receive 5 fiovs from the stakes ; distance, 1£ miles ; for horses that have never won any advertised race ; entrance, 80s. To start at 3.45 p.m. Mr J. Coyle's Fortune Bst 181 b /Homes) ... ... I Mr R. Kingan's Tenby Bst 181 b (Kingan) . . ... \ Mr G. Graham's Lotia Bsfc lib (Donnelly) 3 Nelly, Kahurangi, Needle, Barman and Vergo also started. Rau rangi, Mangatangaroa and Papa were scratched. Fortune and Kahurangi were . quickest on ther legs and led past the stand followed by Tenby, Barman, Lotia, Needle and Vergo in that order. No material change took place until entering the straight when Tenby joined Fortune pfter a splendid finish- resulted inji dead heat. Time, 2min Sdsec. Dividend, on Fortune, 193 ; Tenby', £1 18s. In the run off Fortune won by a length paying a dividend of £1 123. 7. Tramway Handicap, of 30 soys ; second horse to receive 5 soys from the stakes ; distance, 1 mile. Nomination, 16s; acceptance, 15d; To start at 4.80 p.m. Dr Bennett's Pihanga Bst (Hall) 1 Mr T. Cameron's The Artist 7st 71b(Schaffer) ... 2 Mr W. Butler's Eothen Bsfc 12 b (McCormack) •.. 8 Kai Iwi Lady, Lonely and Emery also started. Strike, Kauri Gum, y Lady Clare, Buckler, Roll Gall and Nelly Were scratched. Kai Iwi Lady was first to break the line, followed by Pihanga, Eothen Lonely, Tne Artist and Emery last. Along the buck of the course Lonely memerntarily took command, but was soon displaced Jff Eothen. Entering the straight ■^^thanga went to the front unJ maintained her advantage* to ihn end, The Artist a good second. Dividend £6 Is. 8.
