-» Wednesday, 28th February. Mrs Stewart (scr) was defeated lay Miss H. Burr (80 x 2 bis), Jhe refijU being 6 -5, 6—4, the third set iibfc having been played. No much in* terest was excited in the match, which was regarded, as a. giffc to the winner. Mrs Stewart ?#l^<fjiQ» lifeless way in the first set but in spite of this only lost by two. points. In the second she showed for a timt a return of old form placing very accurately, but her effort was. mad*, too late. The excellence of th« handicapping, was however, seen in the close finish. The service of the winner surprised the onlookers. The next pair were Mrs Dermar (scr) and Miss Burr (15 x 2 bis.) This was a foregone conclusion also; Miss Burr, though very certain' in returning being hardly strong enough to last through more than one severe set' with her opponent, who however did not play with her usual dsuh, Beault, o— i, 6-4, two ftt%
only being played. Miss Pnrcell then opposed Miss Whyfce, from whom she received 115. As matters turned out the odds migh|"~w"ell have been given to the otfrerrplayer, who was slightly overm^*^ed. The first set fell easily * to Miss Purcell, the next two with much greater difficulty. Indeed at one stage of the contest it was a toss-tip fop the winner. The rallying in this match were particularly '"'wrtl sustained. Result, 6—2, 6 — 5, .B—4. ' ______
