CARNARVON C.C. v. FOXTON C.C. Tin; return match between these clubs was played on Saturday last at Mount Stewart, some miles out from Sandon, in one of Mr Kew's "paddoeksr-and resulted in a very decided win for the Carnarvon players by an innings and 12 runs. Mr Kew had taken infinite trouble with the " pitch " and succeeded in preparing a very good one indeed, all things considered. We cannot even •• in the judgment of charity* say that any very brilliant play was exhibited on either side, but unmistakably the Carnarvon men had the best of it all round. It will be enough to say that the fielding of the Carnarvon team was good ; that of the Foxton men was, not to put too fine a point on it, not good, Bowater, the Carnarvon captain, won the toss and wisely elected to send his men to the wickets. At tha outset tilings looked gloomy for Carnarvon, three of their wickets falling in as many " overs "for 5. But a change came " o'er, the spirit of the scene " when Kew, cheeriest of jolly cricketers,: strode to his post with a hearty smile and set the ball arrolling. Leather-hunting on a rough field in jjlazing weather is very good sport, ho doubt— pspscially to on-lookers resting in the shade ; but Foxton somehow could not get into the spirit of it. To say the truth Foxton got demoralized instead, and the fourth wicicet of" Carnarvon did not fall till the score had mounted to 66. Good for Carnarvon ! The innings closod for the highly respectable total of 111, including 41 extras. The Foxtonians then went to the wickets, and it was speedily apparent that it was not their day out. Want of practice told its usual tale, and the last wicket of the first innings fell to 45. This necessitated their following on, and although they one and all tried their hardest to avoid a one-innings defeat, fate was again not on their side. Their seoond innings closed for 54. The Foxton total for 2 innings was thus 99, including 8 extras ; that of Carnarvon for one innings, 111. Win for Carnarvon by an innings and 12 runs. More power to them ! And better luck to Foxton next time I How long must we harp on the old string — practise, practise, practise. Wo append the scores : — Cabkarvon. Read, bJ. Kruse . . . 1 Matthews, b J Kruse . . 0 C.
