: ♦ — . TIIURSDAY, BTH. Mr Howard beat Dr Dermer after a somewhat tame contest. Neither player was seen at his best, Howard not playing in his usual steady graceful manner, and his opponent seeming to have lost his first fast ball altogether. Result, G— 4, 6—2, the third set not being played. Afterwards Miss Jane Whyte encountered Mrs Mellish giving her ■§• 30. The first set was easily won by Miss Whyte, her rival playing in a very half-hearted manner. The next set- was a. complete boil over Miss Whyfce only securing two games. In the third set both players were on theiv mettle, and for a time victory hung in the balance. Eventually Miss Whyte wop s.x games to four. Mrs Mellish returning two many sof balls to the .service: line whence her opponent had no difficulty in driving them to the right hand corner.- Eesult, 6-0,2— G, 6 -4. pbiday, 9tb[. Miss H. Burr beafr*Miss Austin 6-3, 6— -3, two': sets >;only being played. Miss Austin -played a : plucky game 'but was overmatched. SATURDAY, lOto. Mr Nixon and -Miss Purcell won the opening match in the combined doubles baating Mr McCrae and Miss ELf Burr, to; whom they conceded 15 x 1- bisque.- The match excited much interest being won almost on the last stroke of the third set. Both sides played well, Mr Nixon as usual being very quick at the net, and Miss Purcell very steady on the back line. TUESDAY, 18th. Bey. Gep. Aitkons, scr., played Mr Bridge £ 30. This contest was very one-sided, Bridge having been too lightly treated by the handicappers. Two sets only were played. I Result, 6—1,6-2. .WEDNESDAY-, 14TH. Mrs Dermer beat Miss O. Symons rather easily the result being contrary to what was expected by the majority of the onlookers, who remembered the nervousness exhibited last year by the winner. Mrs Dermer after the first two games seemed to become perfectly selfpossed, and played a rattling game. Her service was especially fast, many of the balls being such as few men could have dealt with. Miss C. Symons on the other hand seemed to lose heart very speedily, and towards the end did not manifest the coolness of play expected of her. Result, 6—2, 6—2, two sets only bding played.
