Dairying in Taranaki.

At no time perhaps within the last ten years have the signs of substantial progress amongst small farmers around Mount Egmont been so marked says the correspondent of the Evening Press.

Undoubtedly the butter factory is the secret of this success. Prime milkers on prime feed will return £1 per month during the milking season. A 50 acre farm should therefore afford an income of £8 per week from milk alone. The weak point in the factory system is, however, in the rearing of the calves. Unless the separated milk is supplemented with linseed or other condiment, the calves cannot be reared in health, or the standard of quality maintained. Buyers of young stores have experienced a much greater mortality amongst stock since the development of the factory system.
