Some time during the early hours of Monday morning a break occurred ill the three-cor.e cable \Vliich' forms one of the three links of telegraphic communication between the North arid South Islands of tile Colony. It was working all right when the operators finished their labours shortly nf'ler midnight, but directly work was resumed the break was discovered. It has been ascertained that the point of severance was near a splice in the cable about 20A nautical miles or knots from Jtjyell's Bay, or as nearly as possible about half-way across tlie strait. The tests also indicated clearly enough that it was a clean break, and that the Copper points must be. ex> posed to the Water, The Cable repairing steamer TWrauora is to be litted up as speedily as possible for the work of repair. She will be placed on the Slip, and it is expected that she will be ready for sea in about a week:
According to the N.Z. Times the folowing is the style of public communications which pleaseth a Liberal Ministry; — The Pi emier r-ceived yesterday a large number of congra'u'atory telegrams upon the action of the Government in appointing two new railway Commissioners. One influential member of the House of Representative? couched his message in ihe following terms : — " I congratulate you and tin country upon having dethroned the Bailway Kings."
A lad named Herbert Duke, aged seventeen years, was drowned on Sunday morning whilst bathing in the Oroua River, npar Campbell town, says the Advocatci The d<?c c ased, whose mother is a widow, and lives close to the Square, io Campbel* town, went oft" to the river with several others, between 10 and 11 o'clock on Sunday morning. Tho hole chosen was near the new bridge, and one in which it appears there is a very stiff whirlpool. Duke was not a good swimmer and got beyond his depth. He struggled for a few moments, and then, before anyone could reach him to lend assistance, he suddenly sank, and never nr-e again. A young man named Summers at once plunged in to the rescue, but could uot find Duke on account of the whirlpool. Indeed, it was with great difficulty that he escaped from also being drawn under. Every effort was made by the cotnf-id^ to j*st the bady ere all hopes of re-animation was over, but they proved futile. A large number of residents of the district were soon on the scene. A rough raft was built, and by this means they were able to thoroughly drag the river. Between five and six o'clock the body was found lying in about eight feet of water, and brought to the surface by the grappling irons with which the dragging was done Very great sympathy is felt for Mrs Duke in her sudden bereavement.
Henry Edward Rumbold. a Grinsby skipper, was sentenced to death at the Lincoln Assizes last November for the murder of his sweetheart of whom he had become jealous at her mode o£ life while he was at sea. Before sentence was passed, the prisoner said he killed the girl and it was right" he should be hanged. He stated that he was a great smoker and asked to have cigars and cigarettes, so that he might not brea't down. He wanted to die an English hero. He expected to meet the deceased girl in another world, and if she knew he broke down in this simple affair, she would poke fun at him.
According to the Premier it is likely the Parliament will meet about the third week in June.
In a contemporary a resident of this town has published a list of provisional directors in a company he is promoting. There has been either monstrous bad writing on the part of the " directors " or in his copy to the paper, as five of the " directors " names are incorrect ! This is not a satisfactory start for a scheme where the inducements to invest are dependant on the supposed accuracy of the promoter.
H.M.S. Pinafore, manned by local flina'eurs is due in this port on Wednesday the 21st February. The crew have been in training for some considerable time, and the public will be admitted at a reasonable charge, which will he forwarded to the Palmerston hospital The amateurs have not alone devoted much time but they have gone to much expense to please the the public, by having new scenery painted, new dresses made, and in obtaining books of the Oppra and the score of the music. It is hoped that the public will respond to the efforts made, as the object i 3 good. A meeting will be held at Whyte's hotel tonight to perfect business arrangements and we have been requested to urge upon all the performers, more especially those who take part in the chorus, the absolute necessity of attending every rehearsal and that punctually.
