That Bonus.

The following is a copy of a letter sent to Mr .Ritchie, of Wellington, by our member, Mr J. G. Wilson, to try and stir Government up re bonus for improved machinefy :—

Bolls, Jan. 8, 1894.

Dear Sir,— Some time ago you handed me regulations for the bonus for improved machinery for production of New Zealand hemp.

Nothing further seems to be done by your department, yet the flax trade is at a perfect standstill and nothing is being turned out. I would remind you that for five years now this trade has been promised a bonus. First it was £10,000 and now' it lias: dwindled down to £2,000.

A little energy on the part of your department would surely get the matter settled. I would also point out that the valu? of hemp exported last year was £214,000, a sum nearly equal to the dairy export, yet much has been done for the one industry and nothing for the other.

Might I ask you on behalf of the millers and those engaged in the trade to get the bonus offered as soon as possible, so as to try and put some life into tbe trade, the stoppage of which is such a serious loss to the Coast.
