New Year's Eve in this town was ushered in with peace and quietness. It was noticed on New Year's morning that several gates had left their hinges, but no damage of any sort was done. Our bandsmen made a tour round the town, aud serenaded the Mayor (Mr T. P. Williams), who took them in and treated them to a little light refreshment.
At the Palmerston Caledonian Sports on New Year's Day, A. W. Watts won the points prize with eight points, and also won the 220 yards hurdle race and halfmile hurdles.

At a wedding which took place at PaddingJon a' short time ago unusual ingenuity had been displayed in the guests' nomenclature. The ." best man's " Christian name was " Bythesca," and two of the bridesmaids were named " Theophila " and " Thyra Halgerda " respectively, while the bridegroom had been ehristenDd " Braginton."

The Frenoh sea-going torpedo boat Chevalier has made her official trials at Cherbourg, and attained a definite speed of 27-22 knots. This is said to be the highest speed which has yet been reached in oflicial trials.
The Manawatu Daily Time*, has published an almanac, exceedingly well printed, and containing many advertisements. There are a large number of views of business places in the Square. All is well, excepting the work is not a local production, the imprint of McKeeand Gamble appearing thereon. After the " blow " about last year's local production the Timtt takes a step backward to resort to another office for assistance.
At the Otaki Licensing Committee meeting transfers were granted from George Broadbent to Emma Broadbent, Club Hotel, Shannon, and from .lames McCorniick to Frank Lemamiuis Garland. Levin Hotel.
Our local racehorses, Dawn, Bavman, Beeswing, Mevton, Moenga, Lniliere and Knramea did not acquit .themselves so well as expected, with the exception of one or two of the nags, at the Otaki meeting. Lailiere was the only horse to win a race from a Held of throe in the Scurry. Beeswing got two seconds in the Trial and Flying, and Karamea ran into second place for the Glasgow Handicap. Xo doubt the heavy going militated ia a great degree to their SUCC:SsfuI- running, combined with hard luck, on one or two occasions. Most of the horse* are used to running on the Foxton course, and the forthcoming races here will give them every opportunity of showing how speedy they are.
The jockey, Charles Watson, who was hurt at Hulls races on Tuesday when Caloola fell, still lies in a precarious state. Watson is wel known m Riccarton, near Christchurch, and is well-known in sporting circles.
It is stated that the Teneriffe partridges lib. rated on Kapiti Island some time ago ar» doing well thsre.
