OTAKI MAORI RACING CLUB.
The above Club's Summer Meeting was held on Monday last (New Year's' Pay) under most unfavourable circumstances, heavy rain falling .the whole day without intermission. The attendance was large, and the racing f.i'ly good, the favourites getting home in five races out of eight. Thfi officials all worked hard for the success of the raeeting^iud their efforts were achieved. Two protests were entered against the winner in the Trial Handicap, on tha ground of a cross, and t& first horse in the Hurdle Bace, tht rides of the second horse alleging that Loneiy had not jumped the last hurdle, but neither were sustained. Two complaints were also laid before the committee, one by. one jopkey against another fois striking him with his whip ; the other against the totalisator proprietor for putting on. money after the horses 'hfid~&sH£tk We think this unpleasantness might be avoided if our Maori friends were to follow the example of other Clubs and appoint a totalisator steward to watch the interest of the public as well as the Club. The two.. jpebya. were severely cautioned in the qyen- * ing by the committee for theuj unseemly conduct towards each other, The sum of £1558 passed through the totalisator, which, considering the weather, was very good, andswas worked by Mr Ames, of WellingJKjn.
