Foxton Licensing Committee.

The usual quarterly meeting 6t the above Committee was held at the Courthouse yesterday at noon. Present - Messrs R. Austin (chair man), Jenks, Little, Ahem and StartupThe minutes of last meeting were read aud signed by the chairman. Constable Gillespie put in his usual quarterly report, in which it was pointed out that the owners of the Manawatu Hotel had by their neglect forfeited the license. The conditions upon which license was granted have not been fulfilled. The report further set out that the license of the Post Office Hotel " was illegally transferred by the chairman on the 2nd day of October, which caused an information to be laid against the present holder of the license." The chairman objected to this statement so the constable asked the clerk to read the application for George Gray's first application for temporary transfer. This was read. George Gray applied for a permanpnt transfer of the Post Office Hotel to Thomas Keegan. Mr Kennedy was present on behalf of Messrs Staples & Co., owners of the Manawatu Hotel, in explanation of not complying with the conditions under which the license was granted at the annual meeting, and stated that they had misunderstood the time for completing of the repairs etc. The clerk then read the foi lowing letter which is a true copy from letter book, sent to Messrs Staples & Co. on 25th October, 1893. Gentlemen. — I am instructed by the Foxton Licensing Committee to remind you of the conditions under which the license was granted to the Manawatu Hotel, viz., granted on condition that the house was pat into a thorough state of repair to the satisfaction of the committee within six months from date, 6th June, 1893. The clerk also read to the Committee the guarantee given by Mr Skerrett, solicitor, Wellington, tor the carrying out ot the conditions, which was as follows : — - To the chairman of the Licensing Committee for the district of Foxton,—On behalf of the owners of the hotel and known as the Manawatu Hotel, I undertake within six months from date to put the said hotel in a thorough state of repair to the satisfaction of the Licensing Committee. On resuming at 2.30 p.m. the Committee retired to consider the business in private and on returning to Court read the following resolutions : — He Police Report. The Licensing bench in committee resolved that the Police report be adopted but that strong exception is taken to the last two lines of Report underlined in red ink as they considered it a direct insult to the chairman more especially as the case had been settled in the R.M. Court. lie Post Office Hotel. Proposed by F. E Jenks, seconded by R. Austin, That the bench adjourn until tha 18th December next, to consider transfer to Keegaa for Poit Office Hotel. Proposed by F. E. Jenka, seconded by W. T. Little, That the copy of

Mr Ray appeared on behalf of Mrs Cawston to as'r for permit to allow her to carry on the license of the Manawatu Hotel until probate could be obtained. This was granted.
