Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, DEC. 5, 1893. The outgoing Mayor.
Yesterday Mr George Nye the present iVlayor bade good bye to the C-iuncillois, id being the last meeting that he would attend, the Mayorelect taking ihe oath and his seat on the twentieth of this month. Polite things were said by both Mayor and Councillors, as there should be. We desire to add a few remarks which will be accepted as being unprejudiced as we have not hesitated to criticise the Mayor's actions when we could not agree with his proposals. Mr Nye has held office by the wish and the votes of the Burgesses for the past two years. During that period he has undoubtedly striven to do his best for the idvanceraent of the Borough with hie regard to its financial position, iiu has taken upon himself a large i mount of labour and personal esponsibility that few men would aave done simply for the honour of he position, and he has never 4i'U(?ged tfivin* freely the benefit of his experience, Such a man d«serves the best wishes of the Burgesses and their thanks, he did his host, and no man can do more. As w<« have said we have differed with the Mayor, perhaps frequently, and we hold even now that we were right, but that doe 3 not prevent us i from appreciating at its fullest worth he real disinterested work he gave to the Borough during the two years he has been its Chief Officer. We 'hank him on behalf of the public for his efforts and trust that the retirement he feels necessary will result in hs speedy restoration to sound health and strength which may permit him in the near future to seek a seat at the Council table over which he htis so lately presided. He leaves the Borough in a satis* j factory financial position.
