Origin of Lloyd's List.
The origin of Lloyd's List, and of the great shipping centre of which that periodical is a record, is pleasantly related in " Lloyd's Yesterdaj arid To-J)ay, lf by ,Mr H. M. Grey. " Lloyd's " originated in 1 a coffee house in Tower Street, kept by a Mr Edward Lloyd, and by means of an advertisement in the London Gazette, Mr Grey traces its existence as far back as 1688. By the time the proprietor bad removed to the cofner of Lombard Street and Abchqrdh „ Lane . (1692) he had 6i'ganidea for public reading ft eySteni Of letters from abroad * which increased" the refutation of his house atid" formed the gerni of the familiar hiiL Mr Grey tliiis describes . the brief history of att early journalistic effort : — •• As his house became more and more the resort of persons connected with shipping, his enterprise idutid riiore atiubibre eHcourSgbtnehijj and the year 1606 saw the establishment of a newspaper, published three times a week, giving shipping and commercial news, and known as Lloyd's News The journal, however, had only a short Career} for in the, seven ty : sixth number some very harm'ess information was inserted concerning the proceedings in the House of Lords. For this heinous offence Mr Lloyd was summoned to appear before the bar of the House, and being there informed that the statement made in his paper was ' groundless and a mistake,' was called upon to ' rectify it in his next.' This he never did, saying he would ' print no more at present, 1 . . » * but the suppression was in form rather than in fact. He merely substituted handwriting for printing, and the news sheet- continued to be read at Lloyd's coffee house. This continued for nearly thirty years, until in 1726 the journal was revived under the title of Lloyd? a List, the publication of which — though under a different name since 1884— has been continued down to the present day."
