The Artesian Well.

To-day the contractor, Mtj&atteraby, has finished his labours until the Borough Council meets on i Monday. The result of the work is so far satisfactory. The pipe is down 246 leet and there waSßtrmgfWvr, equalling 80 gallons a miante at a point eight feet below the surface. It will be remembered that the pipe is sank close byitb^ I^^GHSfc 6 ' the highest point in the neighbour* hood, and the earth is excavated to the depth of nine feet, and a trench is cut from the pipe to the Awahou stream. It is suggested that a pipe be carried from the well on a level, to a point below the bridge, when a fall of some six feet will be obtained, and a direct fall fram\ there into a ram will enable the water to be lifted to a heighth sufficient to havetanks from which carts' ca'^be filled. The water is very clear and soft, and shows the presence of air in it, by a slight effervescence.
