Up to 1152, the Irish Church was independent of Borne. In that year, the first Legate came from Rome, and four years afterwards the Pope granted Ireland to Henry II of England. The condition under which Ireland was granted by the Pope to England was, that every house in England should contribute a yearly pension of one penny. Ireland was included in this con tribution.
