The Bazaar.

« _ To-morrow afternoon, with some little ceremony, the Mayor will open the Bazaar held in connection with the Primitive Methodist Church. Ifc is nofc often thafc His Worship has had an -opportunity of assisting local works of this kind and we have no doubt but that he wi 1 on that

account be able to make mnch of this opportunity. The object is such a good one that we trust fche general public will do all fchey can to secure a good start, and therefore they will be there in numbers. The members of the Church and thoir friends, have tor some months past been working and now they desire a ready sale in return for their industry and good nature. In these bazaars the power of women again becomes manifest, before fchey secured their electoral privileges they have always been the mainstay of every church, and their nimble fingers have raised more money for such purposes than all the labour, and all the talk of men. The times do nofc forecast a busy period, but still, so we are informed, ifc was impossible to hold ba«k the bazaar, as it was intended always to hold it about this time, and the goods prepared are summer goods which would not be so saleable later on. Ifc behoves one and all therefore to turn fche tide towards success, which can be done by unanimity and earnest effort. The goods are both useful and ornamental and will be sold at reasonable rates, the fair saleswomen believing in cash, which is what is wanted, and therefore they will be moat anxious to carry on fche exchange of goods at prices which will defy competition. We do not pretend to be in fche secrets of fche managers, and do nofc undertake to say what fche " curiosity tables" are. P.radvenfcure they may be amateur made ones, perhaps not. They may be only ordinary tables holding curiosities : it would take too long, supposing this is fche right reading of fche advertisement, to conjecture what curiosities may be displayed thereon, as in this town a very lively collection could easily be made. Our advice is, go and see, when probably your wildest dreams will be found far far out, to what you will see. A shooting gallery is another draw. This is a game of skill and though we have no leal " Milingtar'y " men, we have members of a Rifle Club, which is a shooting and not a stealing institution as the name rather suggests, and there is no reason why fun to them and money to the bazaar should nofc be obtained by some first class competitions. There is no totalisator, that is only found on a racecourse, bufc still the knowledge ot human nature leaks out in fche announcement of " Bran tubs " and " Fairy wells " pretty names for as good an old lottery as the wicked old " tote." Still such things musfc be and we see no harm in it, but, as usual with all churches they discountenance any lottery until they find it convenient to use it. This bazaar is ■ nofc a whifc worse in this respect to | anyother church bazaar, bufc as we } called attention to the other little i gambles we teel we musfc do so even to this one. We do heartily desire that the hopes of the energetic promoters may be wholly fulfilled, and trust nexfc issue we may have the pleasure of recording excellent business done.
