It is reported thafc the United States Cabinet has rejected the compromise on the silver question, notwithstanding thafc it is supported by 58 Senators. News has been received afc Capetown thafc the column from Fori; Vic--1 toria has engaged the enemy and defeated them. The fighfc took place
afc tndiarnos, midway between Fort Salisbury and Bulawayo. One hundred of the enemy were killed. The Fort Salisbury column also defeated the enemy near the same place, and the two columns then united. The Chartered Company's column took an active parfc in opposing the Matabele's advance. Captain Campbell was shot in the leg and died. There are no ofcher casualities on the parb of the company's force. News from Matabeleland states thafc Major Adams' column is within 80 miles of Bulawayo. The other columns have effected a junction within 60 miles, and are believed to have occupied passes leading to Bulawayo.
