The»fidifc«>r-in-ohief was William D wight Whitney, Proteasor of Comparative Philology and Sanskrit. The Saturday Review considers him the highest authority in the world in philology. The late James Russell Lowell said : " I subscribed to the Dictionary because I felt sure that auy work of the kind under the superintendence and direction of Prof. Witney would be well done." Prof. Whitney himself wrote tha definitibriis'in Grammar, Comparative Phifology, Ethnology, and Anthro pology, and decided the spelling and pronunciation. He had, as editor-in-chief; the assistance of one hundred and fifty-si* persons, and of these no jteas than forty eight were permanently upon the pay-rolls, and gave up their whole time to work upon the Dictionary. Fifty persons read the proofs from beginning to end. The definitions were written in all cases by specialists in the different departments of literature, science and art. For the medical and surgical • definitions it was necessary to secure the services of four scholars, for the zoological six, for the botanical geven. As regards the theological definitions, the aim of the editors has been^ia present all the special. doctrfiplfbfihe^different divisions pf* the oJM^pfilin^such a manner as to; convey^'td" the reader the actual intent those who accept them, and for this purpose the co operation of a number of clergymen of various churches was obtained. The resnlt has been that distinguished clergymen of. niany denominations unite in pronouncing these definitions fair and accurate. The owner of the Century Dictionary oecomes the possessor of a magnificent reference library. The dictionary is published in six volumes Ut two guineas a volume, and, arrangements can be made to purchase it on the instalment plan.
