Foxton Borough Council.
A special meeting of the above Counpfl. was held at the Library buildings, ; yesterday, a t 2 p.m. Present-rThfi' Ha^oa^(G. Nyei, Crs Bradoock, McPhersqft, : Williams, Hamer, and Williamsl -. The Mayor said the meeting was called to consider the artesian water supply! Or Williams said .that there are better prospects of < getting water. On Saturday night the contractor knocked off and yesterday an extra length cf pipe was put on and this morning the water was within 18 inches of the top of the pipe which was above the ground. He was certain the flow of water was not lost. He believed if 15 feet further was sunk, a fair flow would be obtained. There was only two feet of gravp.l in the pipe. He hoped the Council would agree to sink another 20 fee t. In answer to questions, C s r JWi|?j> liams said he had measured' all the pipes down. There were.. 18 pipes down and they measured 284 ft G inches. The Major said judging by the colour of the water he thought the pipes were down on clay rock. The best flow in Wanganui was obtained* in fine sand. The Clerk said the amount expended up to date was £157 10s, but did not include costs of other wells. Cf Williams thought it a great pity not to go on and spend another £50. There are, as far as he could judge, good indications of getting water. The Mayor said he was in hopes water would have been struck before now. Of course if wat/r hffd been obtained a loan would have had to be obtained to repay thev^igqHntji reused on the well and taken from the roads. He would be sorry , to the work stopped fft the ; present stage. . '•■■■/,■.■•* Or McPherson thought . the , work ought to continue for a:ifnshVr*iatftiey % The Mayor thought the contractor 'might agree to find water fori/a^) certain sum. It would be a test as \ to his opinion as to the vicinity o£ --z water. .-.- : - r .«,y Cr Hamer said ■ outsiders had usaid let the outlay still go on. . v i The Mayor said it must be mufor-^; stood that if water is struck a loan^ ; « must be raised to return the money borrowed from the roads.: . '..■■-.,> ;.,«.. j It was proposed by Or- Hamer, seconded by Cr McPherson, That Battersby be kept at work until the total sum expended^ oh sinking the well amounts to £200, if water be not struck earlier.— "Carried.
