Foxton Borough Council.

« The usual monthly meeting was held at their offices yesterday afternoon. There were present— Crs. T. P. Williams, R. Austin, H. Bradcock and J. McPherson. In the absence of the Mayor, O. Austin took the chair, Ors. W. Hamer and F. E. Jenks, the newly-elected members, made the usual declaration and took their seats. The Chairman congratulated the new Councillors on their accession to office. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Mayor was granted leave of absence from the meeting. Mr C Syraons wrote, asking permission to put in a culvert in each of the two drains in Patrick-street. The Ranger sent in a list of the number of impoundings for the last 5 months as follows : — Horses, 186 ; cattle, 82. Mr E. Battersby wrote as follows : — Since last report I have driven nine feet 6 inches (eighteen inches in gravel and eight feet through papa rock. This is the first strata that would keep the water down, and when we drive through this strata, I think the water will flow. Mr A. Spiers wrote asking that Dudson Bros, name be placed on rate-roll for section in Harbourstreet, in place of his. The Public Works Committee reported as follows : — " Your Committee have to report that during the month, and owing to the exceptionally heavy rains, Union-street has several times been flooded, and several of the rate-payers complained of the water over-flowing their property. On the 12th the culvert burst up, and j'our committee met on the ground and came to the conclusion that it was impossible to patch the drain up any longer, but that they must put in 9in. pipes from the river to culvert in Johnston-street, which has been completed. So far as we had pipes. About 40ft. is stiil to complete, the pipes for which are ordered." Proposed by Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Homer, That the Public Works Committee's Report be adopted. — Carried. Proposed by Or Jenks, seeonded by Cr Bradcock, That the Public Works Committee be authorised to replace with 9 inch pipes the old drain in Union-street, from outlet at river to Johnston -street. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Williams, seconded by Cr Austin, That the clerk be authorised to order the additional timber required for bridge over main drain from the gravel pit, on Wirokino i-oad.— Carried. Proposed by Cr Bradcock, seconded by Cr Hamer, That this Council place posts showing the depth of flood water on the Wirokino road, and to be left in the hands of the Public Works Committee as to the number of posts to place in. — Carried. The Council went into Committee on the artesian water supply. On resuming its ordinary sitting, Cr Hamer proposed, and Cr Jenks seconded, That the Public- Works Committee be empowered to carry on the sinking of the artesian well, until the 16th inst., when the clerk be instructed to call a special meet ing of the Council to further consider the matter, and in the meantime the Public Works* Committee ascertain the actual depth.— Carried. The following accounts were passed for payment : — For labour on Union-street drain, £25 7s ; J. Sullivan, £Q 10s ; C. Spring, £1 14s 6d; ditto, £8 18s lOd ; T. P. Gibson, £6 ss ; F. E. Jenks, 5s 6d ; F. Taylor, 7s ; Hennessy, Westwood Sc Co., £2 7s Id ; P. Gueriu, ranging, £5 4a 4d ; commission on dogtax, £1 8s;. J. McGill, £10 2s 3d; Levin & Co., £10 4s; E. Battersby, £8 18s; charitable aid to Mrg Young and Cole, £4 7s 6d ; Library account— H. Blake, £1 10s. j The meeting then adjourned
