M. Zola, addressing the gathering of journalists at the Imperial Institute, commented on the advantages of the British custom of preserving anonymity in political writings. Sullivan secured tha lead at the start, but Bubear spurted and was on even terms at the Thames boathouse. Sullivan shortly afterwards increased the pace, and at Walden's had a lead of two lengths ; and from this out the race was virtually over. Few bets were recorded, at the start the ruliug odds being 11 to 8 on Bubear. Sullivan narrowly escaped collision with a steamer when shooting Hammersmith Bridge, and lost quite two lengths through having to change his course.
