The insurgents have seized the Custom-house and arsenal, and also captured" Nictheroy, a suburb five miles east of the city. s The rebel squadron has now complete command of the approaches to the city. It is proposed to starve the city into submission.
President Peixote imprisoned many of officers suspected of disloyalty, aud appealed to the country for troops. He failed, however, to elicit any response. The rebels aro in possession of 30 warships and merchant vessels.
