Cruelty to a Young Woman.
Great excitement was caused at j'ukekohe by the continuation of the case against Dr Dalziel and Mrs Dalziel, chargcl witn cruelly ill treating the girl Anna Dalziel, aged 24, by striking her with a tawse. Evi denes was gi\\?n by Anna Dalziel, win stated that she was supposed in her ordinary work to clean an on • tire hors->, taking the dirk from its leg.? and curry -combing it, besides washing its logs. On this occasion her father spoke to her about not cleaning the hov.se. Witness told him she deserved to bo punished for having left the work undone, and asked her father to punish her with a tawse. Surprise was expressed in Court at this statement, which was most remarkable in view of the story of the gill as supplied to the constable to whom she made complaints. The witness stated further that she had had a few strokes from the tawse previously at her own request. The girl gave evidence under compulsion. She did not appear at the previous sitting of the Court, and a warrant was ordered for her arrest. She was then said to have returned to her father, and counsel for the defence, to avoid the arrest of the witness, consented to produce her the next Court dav.
