War by Candle Light.
During the Crimean war there was, of course, a great' increase in the price of many commodities, and in this respect a very good story is told of a Sunderland woman. The old dame went into Caleb Wilson's celebrated shop and asked for a pound of tallow candles. '• A shilling a pound, ma'am," replied the shop man. " A shillen a pund !" replied the woman in her native Doric ; " what's that for ?" " Tallow's gone up," was the answer. " God bliss ma 1 aud what's it gone up for? queried the astonished customer. " Why, on account of the Russian war." " Laud-a-mussy !" exclaimed the poor innocent old body, " and ars they actually fighting by candle leet ?" "
