English Strikes.
Lancashire miners are begging from door to door. About 180,000 hands are idle in Wales. Thirty passenger trains on the Great Northern line have had to be stopped owing to the clearness of coal. Owing to the scarcity of coal, the steamship owners are refusing charters, and factories are stopping work in all directions. Despite the presence of the troops, the Welsh mineis have closed all the pits and terrorised the non unionists. A thousand strikers marched on Ebbow Vale, in Monmouth, Wales, in order to intimidate the men who had taken their places. The latter retaliated and a tierce fight" ensued, a number on either side being injured. The Cumberland miners have resumed work at an advance of 10 per cent. . The Durham miners refused to strike. Cordous of soldiers surround the working districts in Ebbw Vale, Twenty thousand Welsh miners are marching on the Merthyr Treharris coliei'ies to compel the cessation of work. Ten thousand men assembled af Pontypiidd and prayed for Divine guidance during the strike. The excitement in Wales, owins; to the strike, continues, and at Pontypridd cavalry and police are patrolling the streets. The stock of coal at the gasworks is almost exhausted, and it is feared that the town will be in darkness tonight. Various magistrates in the disturbed districts are prepared day and night to read the Riot Act, and express a determination to suppress Hiie trouble with drastic measures. Three thousand troops are stationed in Card ill' and Newport. The strikers who marched on the Merthyr Treharris colleries compelled the cessation of work. The Scotch ironmasters have closed down their furnaces owing to the dearness of fuel.
