The Barque Achievement Ashore.
Quite a sensation was caused in town on Thursday night by th.ft receipt of the news that the barque Achievement had gone ashore in Worser Bay says the Times. The Achievement, it will be remem&fed, arrived here on the 4th inst " from Liverpool after a voyage of 172 days. She brought 961 tons of general cargo for this port and Dunedin, and having discharged the Wellington portion of her cargo, consisting of 487 tons, she left) for Dunedin on Thursday, being towed out by the Duco. She cleared the Heads about noon, and towards 5 o'clock she was some five miles off the land to the r south* east. A southerly gale then sprang up, and the wind blew with great force. Captain Bees decided to re* turn to Werser Bay for shelter, and she brought up uear the Pinnacle Hock about 8 o'clock. Her misfortunes, however, Were not oyer. The
anchor chain, it is siip'pose'd, pavted, and she drifted helplessly on to tile rocks abreast of the pilot station at Worser Bay. Her signals ot distress were seen at the station, and the pilot crew lost no time in going off to her, but they could render no assistance. At midnight she was lying broadside on, and was rolling heavily. The captain and crew were all safe, and were on board of the ship. The Achievement is an iron barque, and her dimensions are : — Length, 1.14 f t; breadth, 27ft 9in ; depth, 17ft Sin. Her gross tonnage is 504 tons, and 499 tons net. She , was built in 1868 by Dobie and Co., of Glasgow, her owners being Doward Dickson and Co., of Liverpool, She is commanded by Captain T. Rees. Messrs Johnston and Co., are the local agents for the barque. At 2.80 a.m. the sea had gone down and the ship was lying steady. A message had been telephoned from the Duco that she would go out to the Achievement at daylight.
