Who shall be Mayor P
■ «. It will- not be long before fche Burgesses will be called on to make a choice of one of their number to be Mayor for the ensuing twelve* months. Who is he to be ?. We understand that Mr Nye. has no intention of seeking re-election, if he would, however, do so, we would recommend his being again | placed in power, there is trouble ahead, financially and in roadmaking, for his successor in office, and it would be better not to " swop horses " whilst negotiating thia
difficulty. Failing Mr Nye, who is likely to face the difficult position, and who would the Burgesses be willing to place in it ? It is quite | time this question was faced and we ••'•:g our Burgesses will turn the matter over ill their minds* as> what ever we do, we must let it I be done after, due consideration. Humour has it that three of the present Councillors are willing to be candidates, if they are they should let the fact be known. VVe have also heard the name of a gentleman quite oUtside of the Council mentioned, one who has had a very great experience on local bodies and who possesses both shrewdness and push, who would make an excellent Mayor, if he would accept the position. We have no desire to press the acceptance ot any person upon the Burgesses, for though we have had to differ very materially on certain points with our present Mayor, we have done so in the furtherance of, as we believe, the public interests; bat at the same time we have the greatest pleasure in expressing our belief that Mr Nye has acted according -to what he has thought best, and in the direction of assisting the town, and therefore should he be willing to accept office for- one more year, thus following the celebrated Dick Whittington, we should much like to see him returned unopposed.
