Farm Notes.
Water remains only a few minutes in a horse's stomach, as has been proved abundantly by immediate slaughter after drinking. It passed quickly through the stomach, and if taken a short time after a meal, it washes out a portion of the partially digested food into the small intestines, and it is this action which is productive of colic, aooording to the condition and supply of food in the stomach at the time of watering. Jlalf the food may be washed out in this way, and give rise to great internal irritation ; therefore the rule, water first and feed t affcerwards, should be rigidly observed. Also, give hay first, oats after* wards. If the oats go first, the hay eaten by a hungry animal will press the oats out of the stomach before digestion is completed Five hundred guineas was the price paid (says the Sydney Telegraph of July Bth) for the "very special stud ram Royal Hero." Messrs W. Gibson and Son, of Scone, Tasmania, were the former owners. Royal Hero was one of twenty-one, pure Scone rams offered by Messrs Brnn ker & Wolfe at thair sale of Tasmanian merinos and long-woolled sheep at the warehouse of Messrs Harris, Jones and Devlin, and had as companions others which realised high figures. Royal Hero possesses quantity and quality, with softness of and massiveness of fleece. Vpfo" matter where examined the quality is the same. He has rich-colored-horns and hoofs, pink velvety nose, ears, &c, all beautifully pure, and these qualities, combined with iplsodid constitution, symmetry, and iirVlike carriage, make him— so the catalogued , description said —" a high-clasu sheep luch as is seldom
seen." His owners recommended 1 him as the best ever bred at Scone. Urchardists please note — The fivecrown pippin is the apple to grow for export ; it is of the best for keeping, of rare quality, and is just the right size for the London trade. It's a mistake to export large apples no matter how good they are, as in retailing at least three to the pound must be given. - Press.
