Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, JULY 6, 1893. Some Work to do.

Whk,s tile Boron ? h Council met on Monday, only to adjourn, Cv Williams remarked that he regretted there being no meeting as he desired to bring up the question of the sanitary matters of the Borough for Consideration. He has promised to do so on Monday next and we trust the Council will give the question that calm consideration the matter deserves. At present we have no supervision, it exists only in name|] and members know of some evils which should be immediately abated. We have a decided opinion that the question can be dealt with cheaply and satisfactorily, but there must be some rearrangement of officers. We hope that Cr Williams will draw up a scheme ready for the Council to consider, or much valuable time will be lost, as we have found that most public bodies expects more than is fair, from a mover in an important improvement. It must be remembered that sanitary matters cannot be neglected without disease and death resulting, and our unfortunate experience in the last outbreak of diphtheria should point a moral and adorn the tale of the reformer. We believe all the Councillors acknowledge something needs doing but are divided as to how it . is to be done, and thus divided matters remain undone. No one can speak positively about any particular plan being, without doubt, the best for any particular place, as each town has its peculiarities and difficulties to contend with, but surely it would be better to try any plan than none at all. We do not wish to touch upon Cr Williams proposals until he has had an opportunity to place them, thought out, before the public, but from the remarks he made on Monday we think he has got the right grip of the subject, and therefore we urge his proposals on the serious consideration of his colleagues.
