A few Figures.
People do not drink quite so much as they did in 1888, probably because they cannot afford to do so. In that year the entire population are credited with 9£ gallons of beer-, one gallon of spirits and a third of a gallon of wine, not a bad little bill to have to pay. Last year the beer totalled to only 7£ gallons, spirits £ of a gallon, and wine £th of a gallon. But as the population is nearly onehalf under twenty one years of age, and a number of adults do not drink, some of our community must be a good old drinking lot as it would work out to nearly 22 gallons of beer and 2 gallons of spirits to those who do drink. From the Statistics we find that 282,231 gallons of bottled beer, and 9,894 gallons of bulk beer, 109,256 gallons of Brandy, 58,476 gallons of Geneva, 11,709 gallons of Gin, 26,769 gallons of Rum, 244,486 gallons of Whiskey were imported in 1892, costing, in duty alone £842,200 or over ten shillings a head of the whole population.
