Manawatu County Council.

The usual monthly meeting was - held at the County Chambers, Sanson, yesterday, at 11.80 a.m. Present— The Chairman (V. 0, Ransom), Crs W. Taylor, F, Robinson, T. Masters, J. G. Wilson and H. Hammond. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read: — A petition from ratepayers of Carnarvon, namely, Messrs Thomas Gifford, J. Deroles, J. Lumsden, John Amon, William Amon, Samuel Amon, David Scott, and Martin Boyle was read, asking the Counoil to take into consideration the almost impassable state of the Foxton-County road, in the formed portion between Rosina Line and Scott's gate, with a view of forming it or making it passable. . From Duncan McKenzie, Sandon, calling Council's attention to bad state of approaches of the two bridges on Wilson's Line between Mr John Hurst's and the Main road. From Commercial Union Assurance Company regarding insurance on goods shed.— The Council decided to increase the increase the insurance to £100. R. G. Edwards, secretary to the Small Birds Nuisance Club, Sandon, applying for a grant of £20 towards the funds of the above named society. ' Charles Bray, engineer^ notifying he had inspected the Campbelltown* Longburn Bridge, and had found it completed to his entire satisfaction, being a good substantial job. Also,, sending a list of the extra material used in its construction. J. Hannay, Colonial Manager Bank of New Zealand Estate Co., Auckland, in reply to a communication sent by the Council, w extension of tramway, that while they fully recognise the importance and advantages accruing to us from the construction of a Line such as you describe in your letter, we regret that our rules preclude us from contributing to the proposed work. In the event of the question being brought under our notice by the Bank we shall be pleased to do • what we can in support of the scheme. T. Masters— That the name of Frederick Botfccher be placed on the rate-roll instead of H. Bottcher for section 81, Te Kawau Survey District ; A. S. Easton, instead of G. H. Hammond— That the request of Mr Rink for extension of time to complete his metalling on Cemetery Line be granted. Carried. Proposed by Cr. W. Taylor, seconded by Cr. V 0, Ransom—That the overseer report upon the furze growing on the County roads, for which this Council is responsible, and that tenders be invited for grubbing the same. Carried.

Mr James Bull waited en the Council in regard to the road proposed to be made through his property. He said he had mentioned in his letter to the Council the amount he required, and was willing to wait 6 or 7. years for the money, provided they agreed to pay him 8 per dent, interest. The road would not benefit him in any way. Ifr was proposed by Or. T. Masters, seconded by Or. J. G. Wilson— That this meeting appoint a committee to go - over the proposed new road on Mr J. Bull'a property, and report to next meeting, the committee to consist of the Chairman, Crs. Wilson and Masters. Carried. Proposed by Cr. W. Taylor, seconded by Cr. V. C. Eansom— That the contractor for the LongburnCarapbelltown Bridge be fined £20 # for noi having the bridge finished "" within contract time. Carried. Proposed, by Cr J. G. Wilson, seconded by Cr. T. Carried. Proposed by Or. T. Masters, seconded by Cr. J. G. Wilson— That this Council grant £20 to the Sandon Small Birds Nuisance Club, on receipt of laat year's balance-sheet. As an amendment, Or. W. Taylor proposed, and Cr. V. C. Ransom seconded— That' £10 be granted to the Sandoh Small Birds Nuisance Club. For' the amendment, Crs. Ransom, and Robinson ; for the proposition, Crs. Masters, Wilson arid Hammond. Cr. Ransom, as chairman, gave his casting vote in favour of the amendment. Proposed by Cr. F. Robinson, seconded by Or. W. Taylor— That J. Cotterill & Co. be allowed till next Council day, July 12th, to finish the bridge on main drain. Cirried. Proposed by Cr. F. Robinson, seconded by Cr. J. G. Wilson— That the offer of Coyle for 400 or 500 yards of sand at lOd per yard, at Movttoa Swamp be accepted, amount not to exceed £20. Carried. Proposed by Cr J. G. Wilson, Beconded by Cr Masters, That fresh conditions of contract be drawn out and printed, which shall contain the following clause in lieu of clause 6 of present conditions : — The successful tendeier for any contract must commence and go on with the work within three weeks of the date of the acceptance of such contract ; if not, the Council may at their next meeting declare the deposit forfeited and ca,ll for fresh tenders for the work, and. shall also contain a clause prohibiting contractors from erecting tents on the road side. - Carried. A special meeting of the Council was held for the purpose of striking the rates, and on the proposition of Cr, J. ,G;. Wilson, seconded by Cr Ransom, it was decided, That this special meeting for striking the different rates be adjourned until the 21slr'inst. - / Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded byjOxHammond, That the report of the committee appointed to examine vouchers in connection with bridge over" the Oroua be approved. — Carried. by Cr Taylor, That notice be given .that it is the intention of this Council at a special meeting to be held on the 80th June to strike a general County rate of £d in the pound on the rateable value of all rateable property in the Manawatu County for the year ending 81st March, 1894, and that the same shall be payable in one sum at the County office, Sanson, on Ist July, 1893. — Carried. Proposed by Cr. J. G. Wilson, seconded by Cr. W. Taylor— That notice be given that it is the intention of this Council at a special meeting to be held on the 30th June, at 2 o'clock p.m. to strike a separate rate of half of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within each of the ridings of Sandon, Carnarvon, Eawakawa and Awahou, and a separate rate of three eighths of a penny in the £ on the rateable value of all the rateable property within the ridings of Campbell and Waitohi ; and one-fourth of a penny in the Mount Stewart Eiding in the Manawatu County for the year ending 31st March, 1893, and that the same shall become due and payable in one sum at the County Office, Sandon, on July Ist, 1898. Carried. Proposed by Cr. W. Taylor, seconded by Cr. V. C. Ransom — That Mr Bray be requested to inspect the tramway, and report in time for next meeting of the Council. Carried. The accounts were passed for payment. The next meeting of the Council will be held on the 12th July.
