The Queen's Birthday.

Every loyal subject in this colony objects to work on Her Majesty's birthday, partially out of respect to the Queen but mostly out of respect for himselvos. Long may |such a happy state of affairs exist. The poor working man of this colony is a wonderful specimen, and so long as he chooses to assert he is poor, vso long, probably, he may manage to get some one to believe him, but for all that, whenever a holiday comes round he is bound to be, not at work, but at the place where the most fun is to be obtained. "We are the people " and a jolly well informed people as to dates of the birthdays of royal personages and saints, we know of no distinction of persons, a sain t or otherwise, is gladly welcomed if it ensures an excuse to knock off work. Under these circumstances it is not surprising to find every effort put forth to make the day attractive in the different centres of population To«morrow the Athletic Sports will be held on the Foxton Racecourse and a oapitaldays amusement has been provided. Visitors will be able to notice how fast some people can run. oven when it is not from their creditors. Others will do some jumping higher and neater than seen in any horse race. Altogether, good Athletic Sports afford morn interest lL;iu horse races, except to those who thiuk they know a thing: or two. Visitors will have no need to leave the ground during the day, as every attention has been paid to find them uood proyidoring. A very large gathering may be looked forward to. The Ofcaki Maori Bacing Club hold their meeting at Otaki to-morrow, and a number of our residents having quadrupeds which have a lot of ' go f in them, will attend there to see them come in winners. We wish them all success. An interesting County " function " is also set down for tomorrow, which is, to celebrate the opening of the Campbelltown-Longburn bridge, a work which has just been finished, and is a monument to the energy of Mr Ransom-, the Chairman of the County. It is a very useful work for the settlers of Campbelltown and Carnarvon and it is wise to celebrate its completion. The settlers do not do many things by halves, except good things, and the small charge made to ' this opening is not to be npprl to defray expense?, but. to test the genuineness oi' the cliiinnuits for lunch, and the proceeds are to go to the Pa-kiievston Hospital.
