President Cleveland and the entire Cabinet, together with foreign delegates, have assembled at Chicago to take part in the ceremony in connection with the opening of the World's Fair. The Chicago Exhibition was opened on Ist May, although some of the buildings are not yet completed. The delay is attributed to the numerous strikes which have taken place among the workmen. The British collections of pictures is a superb one. Very few of the courts at the Chicago Exhibition will be ready before next month. Only 60 divisions are completed, while 140 are still in course of construction. The New South Wales display is highly praised by the Commissioners. The Chicago Exhibition was formally opened on the Ist May. President Cleveland made an eloquent speech, in which he referred in eulogistic terms to the stupendous achievement of American enterprise. He said the strong representation of all the countries of the world at the Exhibition exemplified in the noblest sense the fraternity of nations. He welcomed Europe to compete and view the industrial triumph of a vigorous race — the splendid fabric of a popular Government. At the conclusion of his remarks he pressed a button, which started the machinery, made the fountains play, and set the chimes ringing. At the same moment over seven hundred flags weve unfurled, cannon boomed, and the enormous Assemblage joined
