The sheep-tax has bean very lightly mentioned by those who do not have to pay it, bub it is a special • tax upon one class for the good of ' the whole community, and last year amounted to £16,970 17s ! It .is only the. poor, farmer had again. , The fact that similar taxes, bearing upon the users of the land, ■> affects everyone, is shown by the 1 statement of the Government Iri- - Burance Department that they have been unable to obtain more than an average interest of, £5 15s Gd per cent, whereas previously they had obtained £Q 11s 5d per cent. Of ' course this sheep- tax was then in operation, but on the extinction of scab it was fairly expected to be - remitted, but the Government having got such a tax ready to hand appear determined to retain it, though the purpose for which it was . raised has ceased to exist. -An interesting table has been issued in compliance with an order of the House made on the Hon. Sir f , John Hall's motion, showing how the principal articles of export have been valued during the last ten years'; , From this we gather that in 1882 Phorrnium was- valued at £20 lls per ton, and varied as follows each year, £18 ss, £15 B=s, £15 7s, £14 7s, £15 18s, £18. 125, £21 Bs, £18 and in 1891 at £17 16s. Wool waa valued at ll£d in 1882 and fell to 8&d in 1886, and rose in - 1890 to 9fd, but fell last year to 9£d. "-■' We are an industrious people, and when not minding our own business are busily employed minding other : peoples. Just fancy, out ,of our " small population some 13,981 people are members of our different local governing bodies, and just 7,525 of them are members of school committees. ;-
