Manawata Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1898. The Coming Election.

Kumours are about as to the probable candidates at the coming election, a fight which will be contested more vigorously than any previous one. The Government morning paper in Wellington has got considerably miked in a sub Ipader upon the subject, and it would make it appear as though the Government were promising their countenance to each and every candidate, no matter how many may contest the one electorate. Government promise? are proverbial for their resemblance to pie-crust, but still it, is rather astonishing to find their journal calmly placing three or four of their supporters as candidates for thi= electorate. We find that a MiMillar has publicly stated that he will be a candidate for Otalri and ha? i been assured of th.c hearty snnpm-f of the Government; the N.Z. Times declares that Mr F. Pir.m will seek election for the same di°» trict, then that Mr Fitzhe>b*'-t will also come forward as a candidate in their favour. We shall soon hear as to the district that Mr J'llicoe delighteth to honour, nnd wp be'i»ve it was the Times which placed him for Otaki but a few weeks ago. Our contemporary has however omitted to mention the name of one candidate, which if permitted the confidence of the Government, as it has been very fairly assumed it possesses, i-? surprising. What nbout Sir Walter Bullor? Just before that gentleman left the cnlouy he informed us that he would return in time for the election and should stand in the Government interest ! Sir Walter is not one Avho make 3 a statement without feeling assured of his position, and we may say he is not likely to proclaim his support of the party now in power had he not received a quid pro quo. We have only referred to the Gover.nin.3nt candidates and that merely 'as a caution to them to accept the promises made b > them with a large amount of salt, in fact let them not put their faith in the Premier or any of the great Liberal party.
