Foxton Borough Council.

The usual mouthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library bnildinps yesterday. .at 2 p.ra Present— The Mayor '(O.'Nye), Cra McMillan, Austin, McPherson, Ahprn, Williams and Thf minnte3 of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Manawafcu County Council, direct- | ing abtention to the complaint made by Messrs Carter Bros re the sand drift on road and mentioning that it had been suggested closing and planting road and asicing if the Borough approved of the proposal. E. Battersby, sending terms, 25s a day for man and son, and 14 days work to be guaranteed. H. J. Gilbert, would only go on willrthe well by the day— £3 a day for man and himself and tools. Agnes Allan, applying for charitable aid. I Mr Anderson waited upon the I Council to find why a cheque promised on Saturday had not been paid. He believed the cheque had not been paid as his rates were owing. The Clerk said the cheque had been paid to Anderson's account within half an hour of the Bank being opened. Cr A ustin suggested that Mr Anderson be requested to retire. Ha looked upon the matter as a storm in a teapot. ;..jj'('r McMillan could not see what Anderson had to complain of The Clerk said Anderson owed his rates and he did not think he should pay the cheque until he got the rates. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Ahem, That the Clerk be instructed to writo to Messrs Robinson Brothers and other owners re fence on the Wirokino rond along the government drain. Cr Ansti-i mentioned that the* fence alonej the drain had been downsome time and cattle had trespassed in the drains. The number of Councillors speaking at once preclndcs a report being given as to each one's view. The Mayor objected to the imputation that his cattle had been trespassing but if they had he would soon see that they were secured. Proposed by Cr Stansell, seconded by Cr Ahem, That the recommendation of the Water Works Committee be endorsed by this Council, viz., the resolution re calling for tenders for completing artesian well be rescinded and Mr E. Batterby's? offer be accepted re artesian well. * Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Ahem, That the Town Clerk instruct Mr Ray to prepare a transfer of land on number one line from Mr Nye to this < ouncil. The Mayor asked for the opinion of the Council on the application of Mrs Allan. She had 2 able bodied sons who should help but wouldn't. Cr Austin thought tlws woman needed relief as she h.d seven little children. Proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That the"! Clerk be instructed to write to the Charitable Aid Board explaining the position of Mrs A, Allan whp has applied for riid. Proposed by O Williams, seconded by O McPherson, That a special meeting be called for accepting tenders on the 20lh and that the ordinary meeting of this Council be held on the sth of April. The Mayor stated that Mr Trask who had been ill for some time had informed him that he would have to resign the office of Sexton. ! ■ The Mayor also called attention to the state of the roads 1, 2, end 6, j which had become, so cut up that the day men would have to attend to theiii instead of the drains. Tenders should be called next month for cleaning the drains out. Proposed by O McMillan, seconded by Or Austin, Thar, Cr John McPherson 's name be added to the Public Works Committee for the purpose of inspecting drains.
