PALMERSTON RACES. The first days racing of the Mana watu Raciug Club's Autumn meeting took place yesterday. The weather was not all that could be desired, a strong westerly wind blowing with seveial showers. The racing was the best ever witnessed on the Pal merston racecourse. For the Racing Club Handicap, of 200 soys, no lest than seventeen faced th* starter, and Mr Powell got them away irj perfect line. All the horses were " in it " all the way, the issue being in doubt until the last few strides when Morion, an ex Auckland Derbj winner, squeezed home by a short head from Musket. Lottie being an excellent third. Several falls oc curred in the Hurdle races, one being rather a serious one ; George Liing (who has lately returned from •\ustralia) had the inonnton Potanga, aad received a nasty fall, remaining unconscious all day. The attendance was between 800 and 1000. £3187 passed through the totaliaaisators, which were worked by Stock and Cohen, of Hawke's Bay. The following are the results : — Flying Handicap, of 50 soys Swoidbelt, 1 ; Tulloch, 2 ; Poinsettia, 8. Five others started ; won comfortably. Time, lmin 19£secs. Dividend, £8 16*. First Hack Hurdles, of 40 soys— Hnity, 1; Piimus, 2; Defence, 8. Six others started ; won easily. Time, 3m ; n 4£ sees. Dividend, £8 19s. Maiden Hack Hurdles, of 20 soya — Nikau. 1 ; Wanderer, 2 ; Elaine, 8. Siven others started Time, 2min 31<ecs. Dividend, £25 18s. M.R.C. Handicap, of 2 )0 soys M.irion, 1 ; Musket, 2 ; Lottie, 3. Fourteen others started; splendid race all the way. Time, 2min 193ec. Dividend. €9 18s. Hack Flat, of 80 soys -Eve, 1 : Jewel, 2 ; Welcome Nat, 8. Eight others started. Time, 2min 21sec. Dividend, £6 10s. Borough Handic p. of 50 soys Ua, 1 ; Whimsical, 2; Stockfish, 3. Six others started. Time, 2min 4|aecß. Dividend, £6 14s. curry Handicap, of 40 soys — Stockboy, 1 ; Hippodainia, 2 ; Whiti karana, 8. Eight others started. A protest was lodged against the winner by the owner of the second horse on~the ground that Stockboy was running under a wrong name, !he stewards met to decide the protest last night, but further adjourned it till this morning at 11 80. Bangitikei " sports " will be glad to hpar of the snecoss of Omaha, Armament — ornelia, in the Oakleigh Purse, 5i furlongs, of 600 soy-», at the V.A.T C. utunm meeting at Melbourne on Saturday, carrying Bst 101 b. Omaha was formerly the property of Mr D. Scott, and bad established a name as a flyer before she left New Zealand. St. Hippo has been scratched for all engagements nt the V.R.O. Autumn Meeting. His withdrawal was occasioned through striking himself a few days ago on the bck, and not recovering quickly enough his owner decided to scratch him rather tban risk a permanent break- ! down.
